Job title : Process Safety Engineer
BU : Functional Chemicals – Chelates
Dept : Operations
Location : Ningbo, China
Organizational context:
Akzo Nobel Functional Chemical is constructing a grass root, state-of-the-art plant in Ningbo, China. This plant will be located at the 50 hectares new Akzo Nobel multi-site in the Ningbo Chemical Industrial Zone. The plant consists of a cluster of processes in which raw materials, intermediates and chelates will be produced.
The sub business unit Chelates operates a global business with four manufacturing sites located in USA, Europe, and Asia.
Job purpose:
Conduct activities, both chemical and technical, for the production processes and support to other departments with a focus on process safety. Take part in the commissioning and start-up of the plant. Guard performance of the operations and improve processes and initiate new projects and processes.
Position in the organisation:
Reporting to : Senior Process Engineer.
Job characteristics:
- Full time
- Day shift
- Training for several months in Europe and/or USA.
Main responsibilities:
Prepare both commissioning and start-up;
- Collaborate with CSU manager to prepare CSU.
- Compile documentation for CSU (manual, timeline, resources, responsibilities).
- Prepare Process Safety Manual
- Train shift teams for CSU.
- Supervise and assist shift teams during CSU concerning both chemical and technical issues.
- Report progress, pitfalls, failures, lessons learned during CSU.
- Propose improvement projects for plant performance; safety, yields, energy consumption, quality, waste, etc.
- Initiate and execute Process Hazard Analysis evaluations
- Define and execute optimization studies.
- Safeguard technical aspects of process.
- Execute process calculations.
- Performs troubleshooting.
- Assist during start up of (new) process parts.
- Define (execute) and safeguard R&D assignments.
- Report activities executed by him/herself.
Ensure that process documentation is up to date:
- PID’s.
- Process manuals.
- Work descriptions.
- Process Safety Manual
Propose and perform optimisations/improvements concerning
- Process Safety
- Business objectives.
- Process optimization.
- Bill of Materials.
- Cost reductions.
- Take part in/lead multidisciplinary project teams.
- Ensure that all activities employed are according local and AN QHSE regulations.
Qualifications:
The preferred candidate holds either a university or a college degree in Chemical Engineering, preferably with a major in process safety and/or process engineering.
He / she should have >5 years of relevant working experience in the chemical/refining industry, with at least a few years manufacturing experience in a multinational context. He/she should have hands on experience in Process Hazard Analysis with focus on dangerous chemicals
The process engineer should possess proven working knowledge regarding QHSE issues, project management and cost control.
He / she should possess proven working knowledge regarding process safety, QHSE issues, project management and cost control. He/She should be self-starter, result oriented, quality committed, and proactive.
Good skills in working with spreadsheets, databases, word processing and presentation programs are required. Knowledge of ERP and MES are an advantage.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Chinese are a must.
